Inheritance of Shinto shrine?

My wife is Japanese and lost her mother about 11 years ago. Her shrine has been in her father's care all this time. He has contracted cancer and we are concerned about the shrine's continuance. Is there any protocol within the religion that passes a shrine to the eldest child? Thank you.

Hello! My name Alicia (people call me Kumako you can if you like) and I'm 16 I'm curious about the Shinto religion. This is something that I would love to learn about. I pretty much want to know anything and everything I can about Shinto. I would love to have someone who could be kind of like a sensei if possible. I really want to learn about Shinto and I would greatly appreciate the help. ^-^

Thank you.

I would like to thank you for creating this site; it is very informative and well done.

I am an American and as such I have not been exposed to anything other than the Western religions. I have never felt comfortable with them because they do not have much respect for the natural world or the values of family and community.

Though I am not Japanese I feel a strong connection to the values and ideals of Shinto, and I would love to continue to learn about it.

I would love to help this site in any way I can.
